Kitchen Backsplash Material: Consider These 5 Options

Your kitchen backsplash material can influence the entire design of this space.

Backsplashes bring your kitchen design together and are a way for you to express your style. However, backsplashes began as purely functional elements that protected the wall over your stove or sink from splashes of water, grease, and food. Fortunately, today, we know how much fun can be had with your backsplash. One of the best parts of designing your new kitchen is selecting your ideal kitchen backsplash material. Each material may have a different effect depending on the design you want. Before you design your kitchen with About Kitchens and Baths, consider the benefits of five common backsplash materials.

Ceramic Tile

The original kitchen backsplash material, ceramic, remains popular because it is easy to maintain, durable, versatile, and often inexpensive. Ceramic tiles can come in various shapes, colors, and sizes, so they can easily fit your design vision.

Glass Tile

Glass tile backsplash offers similar benefits to ceramic tiles, as they are equally versatile and easy to maintain. Glass tiles reflect light, however, which makes your kitchen appear larger and brighter. You can also find glass tiles in a range of shapes and sizes, ranging from classic square tiles to long and thin bars. You can also find nearly translucent tiles and those that are more matte.

Stone Backsplash

Natural stone can create a backsplash that feels textured and organic. For instance, you may add white marble for clean, chic elegance. Alternatively, white slate can add unique character and depth. Stone is more expensive to work with than glass or ceramic and is more porous than those materials. Maintaining a natural stone kitchen backsplash will require cleaning with a pH-neutral cleaner.

Metal Tiles

Metal tiles are an increasingly popular kitchen backsplash material. Stainless steel, copper, and brass can all brighten up your kitchen with their reflective abilities. At the same time, they instantly elevate your kitchen design.

Metal can come in a range of sheens and textures, from brushed metal to shiny, geometric patterns. Metal is easy to keep clean and relatively resistant to damage. However, you may not want too many shiny metal surfaces in your kitchen if you already have many appliances.

Wood

A wood backsplash can effectively complement a minimalist or cottage style, easily warming up the look of stone countertops and stainless-steel appliances.

Kitchen backsplashes made from shiplap or beadboard are quite popular and have a distinctive look. However, they must be properly sealed before installation and carefully maintained to protect against permanent stains and water damage. Fire codes also often require a clearance between gas burners and flammable materials. You might use porcelain wood instead, which is relatively indestructible and easy to maintain.

Whatever you choose, your kitchen backsplash material can help you build the beautiful kitchen you want.
