Materials Breakdown: Kitchen Countertops

Kitchen countertops come in many different beautiful finishes such as granite, quartz, and marble.

Kitchen renovations are full of exciting choices and options. Materials, layouts, and added features can come together to create the kitchen of your dreams, but not every decision is an easy one. Picking materials for kitchen countertops, cabinets, and floors can be particularly difficult, as these choices have a massive impact on your space’s appearance and functionality. In this week’s blog, let’s explore some common materials used for kitchen countertops.

TYPES OF COUNTERTOPS:

Granite and Marble

When many people think of kitchen countertops, they think of stone or stone-like materials like granite and marble. Granite and marble are natural stone products that look absolutely stunning in almost any kitchen. Both materials must be sealed once or twice per year, and they can require very specific cleaning and maintenance regimens. Despite their significant expense and maintenance needs, these materials provide unmatched elegance and an incredibly useful surface for cooking and meal prep.

Quartz

Homeowners who love the look of marble and granite but dislike the maintenance requirements often consider using quartz. Quartz is a manufactured material with many of the benefits of granite and marble, but without as much care needed for refinishing and sealing. Because it is an engineered product and not a natural one, quartz is available in a wide range of color combinations.

Butcher Block

For homeowners who want a more rustic-looking space, butcher block countertops are a great way to incorporate wood into your kitchen’s design. Homeowners often utilize butcher block countertops as an accent and in limited spaces, such as a kitchen island or near the kitchen sink. These surfaces require significant upkeep, vigilant cleaning, and routine conditioning and sealing to look their best.

Tile

Ceramic, glass, and porcelain tile are commonly used in kitchen backsplashes, but some kitchens feature tile countertops as well. Like butcher block countertops, tile features are often limited to specific areas. Tile comes in a virtually endless array of colors, finishes, and styles, ensuring that homeowners can find materials that blend seamlessly with the rest of their kitchen’s design. Keeping grout clean can be a challenge, though, and homeowners may want to keep extra tiles on hand to replace any chipped or broken tiles in the future.
